People That Have Charity Give Charity
December 13th, 2007Well, if you are now in the full swing of Christmas, you have undoubtedly ventured out to the malls. You literally take your life in your hands doing so! People who are serious shoppers are like well trained soldiers of fortune. They take no prisoners and are willing to claim what is theirs! It’s an adventure…one we get to see every year.
So, during one of my recent adventures to the local Mall, I had a chance to sit down for a while and take a break. I had a clear shot of another Christmas tradition - bell ringers. It’s something that I know you’ve seen. The Salvation Army bell ringers collect money every year for those in need. Christmas is all about Charity, translated Love.
I watched for a while as people would pass by. The volunteers would cheerily ring the bells, smile at the passing, and provide a warm look of genuine care. Many passed by, but few would actually take the time to drop their “pocket” change in the bucket. One person caught my attention though. He was by himself. Dressed as a raggedy man, obviously someone that may himself need a little charity. He walked up and to my estimation, gave everything he had in his pockets. More than likely, he was at the mall for one reason - warmth. What struck me was his ability to Love.
This is all that Jesus asks of us - to love one another as ourselves. To take care of our brother and his needs before our very own.
After watching this fellow, he then left the mall. I guess what followed won’t surprise you. Several people, together, left the mall shortly after. They were all wearing the latest cool clothes, expensive shoes, one carrying a purse that is apparently worth over $1000! I know, because I have a good reference to these things - my wife! Anyway, not only did they walk by, but managed to try to place distance between the bell ringers and themselves as quickly as possible. As though it didn’t exist.
Here’s what I have been able to learn through all of my years. God speaks to us in many ways, through many people. Bell ringers are another example of a conversation that God may be having with you. The point being, a chance to provide charity (love) to those less fortunate than you! God provides you with your every need, so why not return the favor? After all, it’s not really yours to begin with. Does that make sense? God gave it to you, and what you do with what you have is either a blessing to God, or a stumbling block to your brother.
The person who apparently had nothing was able to give all. The people that appeared to have all to a fault, gave nothing. Where are you?
